Hi, Karen Chau here.
"Tony's Story" is written as a first person narrative that follows the consciousness of Tony. The story is structured into four parts, and every section begins with the setting which gives a context of the scene. Every scene involves Leon, the narrator, and the big cop. The tension between the two parties, Leon and the narrator versus the big cop, gets more intense in every section. Although there is no clear explanation of why the initial conflict in section happened, it can be inferred that the same grudge was what caused the conflict in the final section. Moreover, repetition was used to illustrate a reoccurring theme. For example, section one begins with descriptions about the weather, temperature, and the "tumbleweeds [that] turned brown and died" (579). Section three also begins with a description of the weather as a hot day with clear skies. The connection is highlighted by the mentioning of "the half-grown tumbleweeds" being "dried-up flat and brown" (581). The reference to the same item and imagery draws the reader's attention to this setting.
