Josephine Surer - Tony's story

Leon's character is a very calm one. Although the reader would expect him to be the more violent one, especially because of his encounter with the cop, Leon is the more structured and stable character. Tony on the other hand, is the more emotionally unstable character; after Leon did not react to the cop, this one does not understand him "Leon shook his head. 'He can't do it again. We are just as good as them.' The guys who came back always talked like that." Tony does not have the same comprehension. Instead, Tony could not even face the cop because of his strong fear, which then leads to his hatred towards him. This hatred is seen in Tony's dehumanization of the cop; often throughout the story, the cop is referred to as "it". Finally in the last scene, when we expected Leon to fight back, Tony is the one who killed the cop out of fear. Tony shows a disturbing side of himself when he does not expressing much reaction out of the situation. "Don't worry, everything is ok, Leon. It's killed. They sometimes take on strange."(584) This adds a twist to the story.
