Night Woman

      This is Lena Gruber.
"Night Woman", by Edwidge Danticat, is a very short story about a woman who is insinuated to be a prostitute who sleeps with mostly married men. She shares a room with her son though she continues to refer to the one room they share as separate because he remains in an innocent world. This story does not have a specific action packed story line. It is short and contains content that refers to either her sex life or her son's innocence, which is also depicted in a sexual manor. For instance when he sleeps and dreams of innocent things, she describes his sleeping stage as erotic.
The story takes place over one night while she watches her son sleep. Nothing exciting happens but the reader learns about the narrator, a single mother, and the relationship she has with her son. By learning about this relationship, the reader also learns about the character herself and her attempt to take such good care of her son while also being a prostitute. The reader is captivated by the language used in this very short story. The language is what makes this story unique because there is no overall conflict, climax, resolution. It is lyrical as if the narrator is telling the reader a bed time story or even a lullaby. The story is told as if the narrator is recounting a fantastic dream.
