The young narrator in “Brownies” is observant and detailed
in the telling of the story. She often compares things or people when
describing them. “We were, it seemed, inside a whale, viewing the ribs of the
roof of its mouth.” (420). The similes create humorous images and display the
narrator’s young imagination as well as her intellectual interests. The
narrator is interested in writing and poetry, and makes thought provoking
comments. In the last scene especially we see a message of the story coming
from her, “When you’ve been made to feel bad for so long, you jump at the
chance to do it to others.” (430). The narrators comments and perspectives are
that of a mature young child. She is curious and smart. Her narration and input
makes her a likable character.
