In the story Brownies by ZZ Packer, the writer uses a combination
of tools to unfold her story- dialog, graphic descriptions lending to
characterization and setting establishment, dual narration, and subtle thematic
information. While action dominates the story, the after thought or the hidden
subtleties of the action largely contribute to setting the mood of the story.
The plot shifts rapidly, but manages to keep the reader engaged either through
pent up excitement of action or through the easy-reading dialog that contrasts
with the poetic language the writer uses when the voice of the “elder” narrator
is contributing to the story.
Numerous characters and their dialog contribute to understanding
the power dynamics amongst the group as well as outside of the group. The
dualism between juvenile and realism are played out in a thought evoking
manner; contrasting themes such as divorce, racism and poverty with teenage
girl tiffs, leaf picking and spaghetti straight hair.
