"Cowboys" Reflection

Hi, this is Carson Patterson.
"Cowboys" has an interesting and unusual narrative perspective. It is recounted in the first person and in many ways seems to be stream of consciousness. The narrator will say something and then clarify or contradict herself. For example, she recounts the story of the brown recluse biting her coworker and says: "The point is I was not always serious. No, the point is we're limited." (p. 27) However, unlike most stream of consciousness stories that I have read, all of the events in the story happened in the past. Therefore, the reader gets a sort of stream of memory perspective on the story which shows the narrator's way of remembering past events and connecting them to her current life, like she might write in an unedited journal or tell a friend. This puts the reader directly in the narrator's head and shows the reader her confusion about her father's death and her own life.
