Hi Josephine Surer here. I found this story very disturbing not only because of the stories the main character was telling but also because of the way they were told. The author uses very descriptive detail to quickly sum up the tragic events in the main character’s life. The story is essentially about the many siblings who tragically came and went in the main character’s life. The irony lies in the fact that despite being surrounded by such a big family, the main character was always subjected to loneliness. The cruelty of her past has made her somewhat immune to inhumanity, causing her to believe that she has become “someone [she] has tried so hard not to be.” Now that she has finally met someone she can trust and love, her shame and self hatred builds a wall of lies between them. Eventually, she is left in the same state she started from, which is loneliness. This leads up to the real consequence of the trauma on the main character, which is her loss of faith in humanity; she does not believe herself able to raise a child properly because of the distrust she has in her own self.
